Do You Dream?

One common shared trait of every human being is the ability to dream. Whether good or bad, dream is part of our lives. Dream is a God made medium of communication. It has been so since the creation of man. God often reveals Himself in our dreams to instruct us. And we are often inspired to do things through dreams. So dream is an essential aspect of our lives.

What's A Dream?

Being a Christian, I'm going to base my definition of dream on the Bible and then move on to our basic understanding of what dream is all about.

In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds.
Job 33:15

The above scripture gives a lot concerning dreams. First of all, a dream is a vision of the night, which occurs when people fall deeply asleep. For our understanding, dreams are like visions according to the Bible. There are Prophets in the Bible like Daniel who will dream and have visions as well. A vision is something that occurs when we are awake, and a dream is something that occurs when we are deep asleep, to which psychologists also agree to, calling it REM (Rapid Eye Movement) during deep sleep.

Causes And Reasons Of Our dreams?

Laying aside psychologists attempts of trying to give us the cause of a dream, though some of their research are relevant; let us understand it through the lens of the Bible.

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.
Genesis 37:5

As said earlier, dream is a God made medium of communication. We dream because we are creatures that dream. We have a spirit which is the true us, living inside of our body. Our spirit uses our body to communicate with the world. Psychologists says that during deep, REM(Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, when the brain is most active, we have vivid dreams. I agree. When our body goes to sleep, our spirit remains awake, and using our brain, reveals to us things of the spirit realm.

When God speaks to us in dreams, it is with our spirit He communicates. Dreams are reflections of our future. It takes a positive attitude (mindset) in God and a great determination to bring them to pass. God gives us dreams to foretell us of future events, which have the power to transform our lives. Joseph was a dreamer. A dream requires a dreamer who'll position him/herself for the fulfillment of their dreams. God showed Joseph many dreams that foretold him of his future life. Things we see in dreams are things that are bound to happen. But not all dreams are good and sweet, which put a smile on our face upon waking up. Some dreams can terrify us and cast our spirit down within us throughout the day.

However, whether good or bad, if a dream will ever come to pass, it all has to do with our stand in the Lord. We have the power in Christ Jesus to bring good dreams into reality and cancel the bad ones.
