Living A Life Of Love

We all know that a house can never be built without a foundation. Every house requires a properly laid foundation to hold and sustain it. A poor foundation will cause a collapse of the house by any storm that blows against it. So in other to build a strong house, we have to build it on a strong and solid foundation which can hold it through the midst of any storm.

Similarly, our lives need to be built on a stronger foundation. In the book of Ephesians 5, we are told to be followers of God as dear children, and walk in love. God is love, and He's the perfect one to turn to for the true meaning of love. Love is the foundation of our Christian living. We cannot effectively live our lives without love.

What's love?

The dictionary defines love as a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties. Howbeit, love is a complex word which goes beyond our contemporary definition, and that’s what makes love very hard to be defined. Amazingly, the scripture gives us the meaning of love. Our contemporary definition of love is valid but not enough. The affections, emotions, feelings etc are all byproducts of love, and should not be used to define it.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8a

(4) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
(5) It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
(6) Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
(7) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
(8a) Love never fails.

Love is a word that can only be properly defined in terms of action, attitude and behavior. We can only know what love looks like through its actions. And the above verses give us the meaning of love with actions. If we're able to exercise these qualities of love, I believe we'll be able to live in peace and harmony with each other.
